In 2009, the period of maternity leave was increased in length and it became more flexible and transferable. If a new-born is required to spend more than seven days in hospital, the period of maternity leave is extended by the number of full weeks spent by the child in hospital over and above the first seven days. The idea of transfer of the maternity leave existed in the case of employees and is now applicable to self-employed women as well.
